Authentic Vintage Saltillo Blanket Featuring Very Rare Grey and Pastel Colors with Delicate Center Diamond Motif

Very Old Saltillo Blanket/Serape Features Grey and Pastel Colors with Unique Center Diamond.

History: Mexican Saltillo blankets have been created since the 1500's, first of cotton and agave fibers, with crushed fruits and insects providing the natural dye colors, and later of cotton and wool. Bright colors are believed by Mexicans to keep evil spirits at bay. The blankets were originally woven by women in the town of Saltillo and worn more often by men. They were used for sitting, sleeping, wearing, decorating, or protecting your horse. Most feature a diamond shape in the center that is woven like a tapestry, with the center fabric comprised of cotton or silk. Some feature the colored stripes of Mexico's national flag (red, white and green.

This beautiful blanket does feature the traditional design with national flag colors near the center diamond. Overall this blanket is a lovely piece of tapestry--in vintage condition. It has been used and has been around a long time, thus it has condition issues. Overall the color and design are amazing and easy to see why these blankets are so collectible.

Fiber Content: Cotton and Wool

Weight: Light Weight

Condition: Faded Color. Holes: The blanket has several (about three or four) small holes/tears approximately 1/2 inch and 1 inc in size. These are on one side of blanket. Some of them have been repaired with off-white thick string. Fringe: Good on one side--about 2 inches long and Fair on the other as some has come off-- length approximately 1 inch long. Edges: Edges in very good like new condition--no fraying. Cleanliness: This item has been professionally dry cleaned at @certified eco-friendly facility. No "Vintage" odor detected. Stains: A few yellow or orange small stains--not very visible unless close inspection. Fraying: There is a small 2.5 inch section near one fringe end where the blanket fibers have separated a little. This is on the same side as the small holes. See photos for more detail on condition.

Age: Approximate age of this blanket is from 1920-1940, my best guess based upon my research.

Size: 85.5 inches long (not counting fringe) & 60" wide.

Design Colors: The main color is a mottled Grey-Brown. Other colors are off-white, yellow, yellow-green, spring green, forest green, brown, burnt sienna, soft red, rose, light pink, yellow-orange, denim blue, light blue, and dark blue. The diamond pattern in the center features delicate shades of light blue, tan, green, light pink, and yellow. The diamond is constructed in very unique pattern of thin stripes. The fringe is off-white.
